§ 13.08.025. Honorary street signs.

  • A.

    The council may, by ordinance, authorize and direct the department of public works to install honorary street signs beneath the official street name sign or on a separate post for any street identified on the official street and alley acceptance and maintenance map.

    B.

    Such honorary street signs shall be brown in color with white lettering.

    C.

    No honorary street sign shall be installed honoring a living person.

    D.

    Honorary street names shall not be identified on any official maps prepared and maintained by the metropolitan government.

    E.

    The department of public works shall absorb the costs for making and installing the signs for up to five honorary street names in each calendar year. A member of council shall not sponsor more than one ordinance in each calendar naming an honorary street for which the costs of the signs are to be borne by the department of public works. The costs of making and installing signs for the sixth and subsequent honorary streets in each calendar year shall be privately funded. The department of public works shall determine the costs associated with making, installing, and maintaining such honorary street signs to be funded privately, and is authorized to accept the private funds to cover the costs prior to making and installing the signs.

    F.

    Only two honorary street signs shall be installed per honorary street name; one at the beginning of the street and one at the end of the street.
